The World Series of Poker announced its 2012 schedule on Tuesday, with 61 official events set to be contested from the end of May through the middle of July.
This year’s WSOP begins on Sunday, May 27, at the Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, with the first open event beginning on Memorial Day, May 28. The 61 events awarding gold bracelets represents an increase of three events over last year. The main event begins on July 7, and has just three “day 1s” as opposed to the four of recent years. Increased table capacity is cited as the reason for the change.
The main event final table will still be contested on a delay, but it will no longer be the November Nine, since the final table will be moved up one week to October 28-30, with live television coverage planned on ESPN. The reason cited is a conflict with the U.S. presidential election.
WSOP Tournament Director Jack Effel had this to say on this year’s schedule.
“This year’s WSOP schedule is very exciting. We’re introducing some fantastic new events, while bringing back many successful stalwarts that our players love. We will expand our footprint this year to include extra tables dedicated to cash games, as well as plenty of satellite and single-day tournament space, so players will have an easy time finding a desirable game without ever having to leave the Rio Convention Center.”
Here is a look at some of the highlights of the schedule:
–A $1 million tournament, called the Big One For ONE DROP, is scheduled for Sunday, July 1. The event will be televised, and a part of each buy-in will be donated to One Drop, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to preservation and access to water.
–The $50K Poker Players Championship is slated for Sunday, June 24.
–There are a couple of “exhibition” events. One is a $560 bracelet bounty event, in which any player with a WSOP bracelet has a bounty on their head. And there is a $560 doubles event, in which two players pair up and play together.
–A four-handed event is on the schedule, with a $2,500 buy-in starting on June 14.
